Ten emerging leaders from various sectors within the Solomon Islands Government have participated in the prestigious Canberra Fellowships Program from March 3 to 10, 2024.
Hailing from different ministries, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification, Ministry of Health and Medical Services, and Ministry of Police National Security and Correctional Services, embarked on an enlightening journey across Brisbane, Canberra, and Sydney.
During their eight-day excursion, they engaged in insightful discussions with senior government officials, industry leaders, and academics, honing their leadership skills through specialized training sessions.
Dr. Emmanuel Joseph Iyabora, former Policy Secretary at OPMC and designated group leader, expressed gratitude for the well-structured program, affirming its profound impact on their roles as future leaders within the Solomon Islands’ public sector.
“The well-structured itinerary, engaging sessions, and interactions with esteemed professionals have broadened our perspectives and will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on our roles as future public sector leaders in the Solomon Islands.”
In addition to exploring Australia’s development assistance initiatives in Solomon Islands, the group had the privilege of meeting with experts from the Australian National University Pacific Security College and the Lowy Institute. In Brisbane, they gained valuable insights into Australia’s Pacific trade relations from Queensland’s Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner, Leata Alaimoana.
His Excellency Mr. Robert Sisilo, High Commissioner for the Solomon Islands in Australia, commended the Canberra Fellowships Program as a testament to the enduring bilateral relationship between the two nations.
The Fellows learned about Australian democracy at Australian Parliament House in Canberra.

Australian High Commissioner Rod Hilton reiterated Australia’s commitment to fostering closer ties with the Solomon Islands, expressing gratitude for the delegates’ dedication in advancing mutual understanding and cooperation.
