Matthew Wale has officially assumed the Opposition leader’s role in the Solomon Islands National Parliament after losing out in the recent prime minister’s election.
Wale’s party, the Solomon Islands Democratic Party (SIDP), won 11 seats in the April 17 elections but the coalition he forged with the Democratic Alliance Party (DAP), Umi For Change (U4C) Party, the United Party and Solomon Islands Party for Rural Advancement (SIPRA) failed to pull the 10 MPs who won as independents, to their side.
They consequently lost out in their bid to form the next government.
Wale’s role as the next Opposition leader was confirmed in a Government gazette published last Friday.
His appointment means another four years for Wale at the helm of the Opposition bench.
Wale lost out to Jeremiah Manele in the prime minister’s election 18-31 – giving Manele his first taste of the top job.
In his victory speech Manele said he trusts Wale will make a better Opposition leader in the 12th Parliament.
“I trust that as the alternative government you will be vigilant in providing the check and balance to the Government of National Unity and Transformation,” Manele said in reference to the Opposition group.
“Whilst we may be on opposing sides, we all have one ultimate purpose that is to serve our people and country,” he added.
“May God grant you wisdom in the discharge of your duty to our People.”
Wale, now serving his fourth term in parliament, was known for his strong advocacy for transparency, accountability, and good governance.
He has been vocal in addressing issues such as corruption, mismanagement of public funds, and lack of government accountability.
The Aoke-Langalanga MP is also recognised for his efforts to promote sustainable development, social justice, and the rule of law in Solomon Islands.
Additionally, he has played a key role in the past as Opposition leader, scrutinizing government policies and decisions, and in holding the government accountable for its actions.
Wale could not be reached today for comments.
Meanwhile, the former Press Secretary for the Opposition Office, Douglas Marau said the Coalition partners of SIDP, DAP, U4C, SIUP, and SIPRA are satisfied with the appointment.
“It’s common under the Political Parties Integrity Act (PPIA) 2014 that the leader of the party with the highest number will definitely become the Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition.
“So everyone are happy to see Mr Wale being appointed as our leader,” Marau said.
