The Governor General has urged the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT), to deliver on its promises.
Delivering his first-ever traditional speech from the throne to open the second meeting of the 12th Parliament today, Rev. David Tiva Kapu said GNUT policies can be achieved if there are genuine intentions and working together.
“…as ministers of the crown, you are to take full ownership of policies set out to improve the lives of people and improve service delivery,” Kapu stressed.
He said people will be waiting to see and be part of policies that GNUT promises.
“You have taken up appointments and vital responsibilities. You will provide the much-needed political direction and strategies that will be needed to drive the implementation of GNUT policies and legislative programs.”
The newly appointed Governor General also urged all Permanent Secretaries to ensure policies set out by GNUT are implemented as promised in a timely manner.
He extended his call to all Members of Parliament to not forget that they have been mandated by people to represent them in Parliament.
“This uncompromising duty needs sound character and clear vision. I trust that you will deliver your duties with due diligence and integrity.”
He further reminded MPs of the country’s motto “To Lead Is To Serve”.
He then congratulated the Opposition and Independent leaders on their appointments.
“You held vital roles in keeping the government accountable, transparent and attentive in discharging its constitutional mandate and in leading and governing the people of Solomon Islands.”
Kapu meanwhile thanked Solomon Islands’ development partners for supporting the country in pursuance of its policies.
The Governor General is the representative of the Solomon Islands’ monarch, currently King Charles III.
The Governor General has a number of functions and in discharging his duties, expected to maintain political neutrality.
The governor-general is appointed by the monarch after their nomination by the National Parliament by vote.
The office of the governor-general was created on 7 July 1978, when Solomon Islands gained independence from the United Kingdom as a sovereign state and an independent constitutional monarchy. Since then, eight individuals have served as governor-general.
