Police are currently investigating one of its officers, a member of the Close Personal Protection (CPP), who allegedly handed out police radios to three young men who were arrested last month for possessing police properties.
Police Commissioner Mostyn Mangau confirmed that the three men, arrested in connection with unauthorized possession of police equipment, are now facing charges.
Commissioner Mangau said, “Unauthorized possession of police equipment by civilians is a serious matter, and we will take stern action against the officer responsible. We don’t want to repeat history. The Police Professional Standards Division is handling the investigation into the officer’s conduct.”
He added that the officer in question has been identified and is under investigation.
“The radios have been recovered, and we have charged those involved with possession of police property, which is a criminal offense.”
A reliable source within the Police CID revealed that one of those handling the radios is the son of a prominent politician, along with two close friends.
“The officer identified for distributing the radios is currently suspended. He provided the equipment to young men already known to the police for criminal activities in the area.”
When asked about the politician’s son’s involvement, Commissioner Mangau declined to disclose identities, citing the ongoing investigation.
He clarified that this case is separate from the recent abduction claims.
“This is an isolated case from the abduction investigation,” he said.
Also, Mangau confirmed that eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the abduction case, including those using social media to spread misinformation.
The police are also seeking other individuals allegedly spreading false rumors on social media.
