Solomon Islands rising football star, Rovu Boyers has registered his name in the country’s football history with a stunning performance, scoring his first international goals in the 4-1 triumph over Vanuatu in the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup 2024, Monday.

The young midfilder’s brace in both halves powered Solomon Islands to victory over Vanuatu — a proud achievement for him, his home province of Western, and his hometown of Munda.

Speaking after the match, an elated Boyers shared his emotions.

“Scoring that first goal was a proud moment, and it’s a joy to celebrate the goal with the fans who are mostly die-hard supporters of Solomon Islands football. I am lost for words… Scoring my first international goal for my country, it’s really a great feeling.”

Boyers added a second goal later in the match, and the celebration was equally special for the 21-year-old.

“The second goal was also the same — I just loved celebrating the goal with the fans and supporters.”

Boyers, a native of Munda in the Western Province and the son of former Politician, Peter Boyers, expressed his excitement about representing both his province and the nation.

The young player also shared his pride in being part of the national team, especially alongside his uncle, Michael Boso, and other Western Province players who made it into the current squad.

“I feel so happy to be part of the national team, and to have my uncle, Michael Boso, in the team. It made me feel so proud that I have one of my relatives and other players from Western province in the squad.

“As a unit, I am happy to represent not only my country but also my province as a kid from Munda.”

Boyers said, while scoring is important, his focus remains on contributing to the team’s overall success.

“For me, it’s not about scoring goals, I just want to perform 100 percent and to help my other teammates to score goals. But I am happy that I managed to put two goals upfront and it’s really a great feeling.”

The 21-year-old also revealed his plans for his footballing career, for 2025 and beyond. His aspirations are set on a new goal — playing professional football in Australia next year.

He credits the Solomon Islands head coach, Josh Smith, for this vision.

“I have decided to play professional football in Australia next year. I think that is my best decision, and also it is the head coach’s plan because he has the vision to send players to Australia to gain that much-needed experience.

“When everyone comes back together, we will be stronger than ever. That’s what’s been in the planning for 2025 and beyond.”

The young footballer also took a moment to thank the passionate Solomon Islands supporters who roared the team to victory.

“Leana Hola ‘thank you’, that’s what I would like to say to all the fans. Thank you so much for coming out today. I am so happy to see that supporters are happy to see me play. It doesn’t matter if they are happy or not happy to see me play, I will still stand and play my heart out for you.

“I love you all,” Boyers said.

With his first international goals under his belt and a clear path to further development, Boyers is poised to be a key player for the Solomon Islands in the future.
