Solomon Islands is mourning the loss of two former Members of Parliament who passed away within days of each other this week – a somber moment in the nation’s political history.

Late Alfred Efona, former MP for Central Honiara, died on Tuesday, while former Malaita Outer Islands MP, Late Martin Mokolo Kealoe, passed away this morning at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara.

Both men, businessmen before entering politics, served in the 11th Parliament together.

Late Kealoe was a parliamentarian in the 9th and 10th parliament.

Alfred Efona entered Parliament in 2020 through a by-election under the Solomon Islands United Party (SIUP), winning the seat left vacant by the late John Moffat Fugui.

Efona represented Central Honiara as a parliamentary Opposition MP, until 2023.

He lost the seat in the 2024 elections to Gordon Darcy Lilo, a former prime prime minister.

His party, SIUP, paid a heartfelt tribute, describing him as a man of humility, principle, and deep conviction.

“Alfred was not only a dedicated public servant but a man of unwavering principle, humility, and conviction,” the party said in a statement.

The party credited Efona for amplifying the voices of ordinary citizens, championing accountability, and promoting unity during his time in office.

He was also remembered as a calm and wise mentor who inspired his peers with his belief in collective leadership and his vision for a better Solomon Islands.

Late Martin Mokolo Kealoe first entered Parliament in 2010 representing the Malaita Outer Islands under the Solomon Islands Democratic Party (SIDP).

He later served multiple terms as MP, until he lost the seat in the 2024 elections.

In a statement, the current MP for MOI, Polycarp Paea paid tribute to Kealoe for his service to the constituency and country.

“Kealoe served the people of MOI with dedication and commitment during his time in office,” Paea said.

“His leadership and contributions to our constituency will be remembered with gratitude and respect,” he added.

The passing of both leaders has struck a chord with many, as the nation reflects on the contributions of the people who helped shape recent chapters of Solomon Islands’ political history.
