Solomon Kings FC endured a tough evening on Australian soil, falling 5–0 to hosts South Melbourne FC in a match overshadowed by a second-half red card to captain and goalkeeper Phillip Mango. The dismissal proved decisive, as the Kings were reduced to ten men and struggled to contain a dominant South Melbourne outfit at The Home of The Matildas.

The fixture, rescheduled after heavy rain postponed Round 1, began with relentless pressure from the hosts. South Melbourne’s trademark long-ball and high-press approach immediately unsettled the Kings’ backline. If not for Mango’s brilliance between the posts, the contest could have been out of reach before halftime.

Jordan Swibel first forced Mango into action after dispossessing David Supa on the edge of the penalty area, only to be denied by a sharp reflex save. Moments later, Thomas Giannakopoulos rose highest inside the box but saw his close-range header crash against the right post.

Mango then produced one of the saves of the match, stretching to tip away a powerful long-range drive from Max Mikkola with a superb one-handed stop. Swibel even thought he had opened the scoring, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Despite Mango’s resistance, the breakthrough arrived in the 33rd minute.

Uchida guided a precise header into the bottom-left corner, marking his third goal in four OFC Pro League matches and his fifth of the season.

The Kings were fortunate to trail by just one at the break, with Mango again denying Giannakopoulos from close range and Mikkola striking the post for a second time amid a frantic goalmouth scramble.

Solomon Kings coach Ben Cahn introduced Rafa Lea’i at halftime in search of a spark, but the second half quickly turned disastrous.

In the 50th minute, Mikkola’s shot took a wicked deflection inside the box, wrong-footing Mango and doubling South Melbourne’s advantage. However, the incident did not end there. Following a VAR review, Mango was shown a straight red card for lashing out at Swibel in the build-up to the goal, leaving the Kings without their captain and last line of defence.

Down to ten men, Solomon Kings FC found it difficult to stem the tide.

Just after the hour mark, Jordon Lampard netted his first Pro League goal, finishing from close range after a well-worked cut-back from Mikkola. With three points virtually secured, South Melbourne coach Sinisa Cohadzic rotated his squad, but the momentum remained firmly with the hosts.

Nahuel Bonada added a fourth in the 78th minute with a swirling right-footed effort that flew beyond the replacement goalkeeper, Eric Wanega. Arran Cocks then capped off the dominant display with a composed right-footed finish in stoppage time to seal a comprehensive 5–0 victory.

The result keeps South Melbourne unbeaten in the competition, sitting just one point behind Auckland FC on the table.

For Solomon Kings FC, the focus now shifts to their Round 4 rematch in Honiara on March 19 — a chance to respond in front of their home supporters and put this heavy defeat firmly behind them.
