In a devastating blow, the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC) headquarters at Vavaya Ridge in Honiara, was completely destroyed by fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Despite the total loss of the building and its contents, Chief Electoral Commissioner Jasper Highwood Anisi has assured the nation that all critical electoral data remains secure and untouched.

Upon being alerted, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Fire and Rescue Service responded quickly to the scene. Despite their efforts, the blaze caused extensive damage and the office building was completely destroyed.

“The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force is conducting investigations to determine the cause of the fire, Mr. Anisi said

Mr. Anisi expressed the Commission’s deep sadness at the loss of its headquarters but emphasised his relief that no lives were lost and no injuries were sustained.

He stressed that the safety and wellbeing of staff remains the Commission’s highest priority. He also assured the public that all electoral and voter registration data remain safe and intact.

“Although the building and office equipment have been destroyed, all critical electoral data and digital records are secure. These were safely stored off-site and through Solomon Islands Government ICT Network (SIGnet) backups, ensuring no loss of information,” Mr. Anisi confirmed.

Despite the destruction, the Commission is taking immediate steps to maintain continuity of services and to continue its preparatory work towards the 2028 Joint National and Provincial Elections.

Staff have currently been working in various locations and work spaces, and discussions are underway to secure a suitable temporary office facility for the Commission’s operations.

“We are shocked and saddened by this tragedy. However, we want to assure the people of Solomon Islands that our work will continue, and our mandate remains firm. Our commitment to delivering free, fair, and transparent elections is unwavering,” Mr. Anisi said.

The Commission extends its appreciation to the public, government leaders, donor partners, and regional sister EMBS and stakeholders for their expressions of sympathy and solidarity during this difficult time.
