Sobiro Clinic in Marovo has received critical solar lighting through the Solomon Islands–Australia Community Partnerships – enabling them to provide cold storage of essential vaccines and preventing women having to give birth by torch light.
Solomon Islands–Australia Community Partnerships support community-led projects that improve living standards.
Sobiro Clinic, which was built by Australia in 2003, received funding of more than SBD204,000 to install solar power for the medical facility.
Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Rod Hilton said Australia was happy to see people living in communities across Solomon Islands directly benefiting from infrastructure projects like Sobiro.
“Australia is committed to our partnership with Solomon Islands,” High Commissioner Hilton said.
“Every time you see a red kangaroo you know that village has a special relationship with Australia – these are small projects making a big impact on the lives of Solomon Islanders,” he added.
“We’re also proud to be directly supporting Solomon Islands businesses by buying their hardware materials for these projects.”
In 2024, Australia funded a record 100 community projects across all provinces of Solomon Islands, representing more than SBD23 million in direct funding to local businesses.
The Australian High Commission is accepting applications for the Solomon Islands – Australia Partnerships until 23 March. For more information, please visit: https://solomonislands.embassy.gov.au/honi/communitypartnerships.html
