New Infrastructure Development Minister Ricky Fuo’o says one of his key priorities is to enhance transparency and accountability within the ministry.

Fun’o relayed this to staff of his ministry when they hosted an official welcome ceremony for him last Friday.

His other priorities are strengthening the capacity of local contractors, addressing Honiara’s road and traffic challenges, and demonstrating a steadfast commitment to advancing the ministry’s work programs.

Fuo’o was given the portfolio after he crossed over from the Independent Group in Parliament to the Government in the wake of the recent political upheavals in Honiara.

He replaced East Malaita MP Manasseh Malanga who walked out of the Manele Government in the hope of forming a new government with the Opposition Group.

But Maelanga, along with former prime minister Manasseh Sogavare, failed in their intention after a number of Opposition and Independent MPs crossed over to the Government.

Speaking to his staff, Fuo’o was blunt: Let us deliver.

He added that he wants to achieve tangible progress in the nation’s infrastructure landscape during his tenure.

A dynamic and energetic leader from Central Kwara’ae, Fuo’o is no stranger to the construction industry and the private sector.

He brings valuable experience as a construction manager and has served as the former chairman of the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI).

His extensive network and proven leadership are expected to bolster government efforts in fostering economic growth, enhancing infrastructure and transport services, and ensuring resilience, safety, and connectivity.

Furthermore, Minister Fuo’o advocates for the integration of gender equality, climate change adaptation, and social inclusion into the ministry’s policies and programs, reflecting the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT)’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive development.

Permanent Secretary Allan Lilia, in his remarks, reassured the minister of the ministry’s unwavering support and commitment to working closely together to achieve shared goals.

He also urged staff to uphold the Government’ General Orders and maintain a positive, professional work attitude.

Representatives from each division—Transport Infrastructure Management, Land Transport Management, Architecture and Building Management, and Corporate Support Services—shared their key priorities and expressed their renewed effort and readiness to collaborate with the minister in delivering effective infrastructure solutions crucial to the country’s economic prosperity.

Currently, MID employs nearly 140 staff members, with officers stationed across provincial centers in Auki, Gizo, Lata, and Kirakira.

As MID minister, Fuo’o is also responsible for two statutory bodies – Solomon Islands Ports Authority (SIPA) and Solomon Islands Maritime Authority (SIMA).
