Rising female forward, Joy Toby put on a masterclass as the Solomon Islands crushed American Samoa 7-0 in the OFC U-19 Women’s Championship, keeping their qualification hopes alive.
After a tough 1-0 loss to hosts Tonga in their opening match, Solomon Islands needed a response—and Toby delivered in spectacular fashion.
From the first whistle, she was unstoppable. It was clear that she was using her speed to tear through American Samoa’s defense.
The breakthrough came in the 26th minute when Toby sprinted onto a perfect through ball and slotted a confident finish past American Samoa’s goal-stopper Nathalia Toilolo.
Toby kept pushing for more, setting up Gertrude Oritaimae with a golden chance, but Toilolo made another big save.
She then wasted no time after halftime, smashing in her second goal just minutes into the second half.
Nine minutes later, she completed her hat-trick with a powerful strike into the left corner.
Not satisfied with three, Toby added two more in the 77th and 82nd minutes, making it a five-goal performance for the young star.
Substitute Gracester Kini also found the net twice, capitalizing on defensive errors to add to the dominant win.
Now, Solomon Islands must wait for American Samoa to pull off an upset against Tonga to keep their qualification hopes alive.
But no matter what happens next, this match will be remembered as the Joy Toby show.
