Malaita Province celebrated its Second Appointed Day; marked by festivities in both the provincial capital, Auki, and the capital city, Honiara.

In Honiara, the Malaitan community turned out in impressive numbers to join in the commemorations.

The event kicked off with a vibrant float parade that commenced from central Honiara to the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Festival Village at Panatina campus.

The event was graced by the Minister for Provincial Government, Rollen Seleso, and the Provincial Speaker for Malaita Province, Ronnie Butala, alongside a handful of government ministers.

Seleso used the occasion to reassure the Malaita provincial government and its people of the continued support from the DCGA (Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement).

He emphasized the importance of unity in forging a strong and cohesive Solomon Islands.

On a parallel note, Provincial Speaker Butala underscored the resonance of the celebration’s theme with the core principles that bind both the provincial and national governments together.

He added Malaita Province functions as an agent of the National Government, governed by the provisions laid out in the Provincial Government Act.

Butala further touched on the recently established Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Chingsu Province of China, a sister province to Malaita.

“This MOU serves as a strategic tool to facilitate international engagement, especially in terms of trade and marketing of local products such as bech-de-mer, fish, coconut, cocoa, and pineapple,” he explained.

“The theme chosen for this year’s celebration resonated powerfully: ‘Empowerment through Peace, Trust, and Unity’.

“These values reflect the essence of Malaita Province’s journey and aspirations.

“It is important to remember that Malaita Province was bestowed with its Second Appointed Day by the National Government on 15 August 1983.”

The three-day event ends today.
