A new  Aviation Complex Building will be built near Honiara International Airport.

This new facility, which will enhance aviation safety and operational capacity,  is part of the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA).

“The new Aviation Complex Building at Honiara International Airport will ensure aviation work can be carried out faster and more efficiently,” MCA Permanent Secretary Alwyn Danitofea said.

“MCA remains committed to delivering these vital projects on time and to the highest standards, with the continued support of the World Bank,” Danitofea added.

The cost of this new facility is yet to be determined. However, the SIRAP2 project has total funding of USD$89.21 million, which comprises US$67.69 million concessional credit and US$21.52 million grant.

He said the new Aviation Complex will be delivered under a Design and Build contract, requiring the Contractor to develop detailed designs covering civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, fire and hydraulic systems. 

It’s expected that the new building will significantly expand aviation facilities and will include additional workspace and parking areas for a more efficient and modern aviation sector in the country. 

The design will adhere to international operational standards and regulations, reflecting a commitment to safety, efficiency, and global best practices.

Danitofea said the Design and Build contract have been awarded to China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG), which is currently in the final stages of the detailed design phase. 

The project draws on a concept provided by MCA, blending innovation with the practical needs of Solomon Islands’ aviation sector.

“The Aviation Complex is one of several transformative infrastructure projects being delivered under the SIRAP2 program, which aims to improve connectivity, enhance safety, and unlock economic opportunities across Solomon Islands,” Danitofea said.

Other key projects include the construction of four new bridges in Malaita Province (Kolofe 1, Kolofe 2, Su’u Harbor, and Bira Bridges) to improve road connectivity and resilience; upgrades to major airports and airfields, including Honiara and Munda Airports, as well as the Santa Cruz (Lata) Airfield, ensuring safer and more reliable air transport; investments in air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces to enhance the safety of domestic flights; and support for regional airport maintenance, strengthening aviation infrastructure across the country.
