China’s new ambassador to Solomon Islands, Cai Weiming, has officially taken up his new role after presenting his letter of credentials to Governor General Sir David Vunagi yesterday.
Weiming is the second Chinese ambassador after Solomon Islands and China established diplomatic relations in 2019. The first, Li Ming, ended his three-year tenure in August this year.
“I am deeply aware of the important responsibility and mission placed upon my shoulders,” Weiming tells Vunagi when presenting his credentials.
“I will dedicate my utmost efforts to promoting bilateral relationship and cooperation in various fields and enhance the friendship between our peoples,” he added.
“I am convinced that Your Excellency and the government of Solomon Islands will provide firm support and assistance to me in carrying out this important mission.”
Vunagi told Weiming the four-year relationship between Solomon Islands and China grew from strength to strength since 2019.
“This relationship is forged by rich and diverse cooperation covering health, trade, commerce, sports, agriculture, education, fisheries, climate change, meteorology and disaster management, air services, rural development, sports diplomacy, police and security cooperation,” Vunagi said.
He added that he’s confident that under Weiming tenure, both countries will continue to meaningfully pursue their shared prosperity.
“Solomon Islands looks forward to work closely with you and your Government to strengthen the new form of partnership that integrates our two countries with the changing international system.”
A seasoned diplomat, Weiming arrived in Honiara on Monday.
