Nine medical professionals from the Solomon Islands have completed a three-month intensive training program at the China–Solomon Islands Minimally Invasive Urological Surgery Training Center, based at the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University.

The program, the first of its kind under a new partnership between the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara and Guizhou Medical University, was designed to provide Solomon Islands doctors, nurses, and technicians with advanced skills to strengthen the country’s health services.

The training supports the full operationalization of the newly built China Aid Comprehensive Medical Center in Honiara.

Attending the graduation ceremony, Solomon Islands Ambassador to China, His Excellency Barrett Salato, congratulated the trainees and commended their dedication. “You are now equipped with practical knowledge and new skills to provide better healthcare, save lives, and raise the standard of medical services back home,” he said.

The nine participants gained hands-on experience in operating theater procedures, medical equipment handling, blood bank management, and patient record systems. They pledged to use their expertise to improve healthcare delivery in the Solomon Islands.

The graduating cohort includes:

  • Dr. Augustin Gasivaka Melly – General Surgeon
  • Dr. Florence Oriana Fiuramo – Surgeon
  • Dr. Anisha Barimata Elisha Sute – Physician in Nephrology
  • Dr. Ellison Bradley Manegehe – Emergency Physician

  • Mr. Brymley Sade – Medical Nurse
  • Mrs. Densy Joan Sa’ohu – Operating Room Nurse

Ambassador Salato also expressed the Solomon Islands Government’s appreciation to China, particularly the Guizhou Provincial Government and its Affiliated Hospital, for their generosity and ongoing support in strengthening the Solomon Islands’ health sector.

The ceremony was attended by senior Chinese health officials, including Professor Li Haiyang, Party Secretary of the Affiliated Hospital, and Ms. Yang Guanghong, Vice Commissioner of the Guizhou Provincial Health Commission.

As part of the collaboration, Guizhou Medical University will also donate new urological equipment to the NRH, to be installed at the Comprehensive Medical Center in Honiara—marking another milestone in the Solomon Islands’ efforts to expand and modernize its healthcare system.
