Today marked the start of the Sol2023 Pacific Games with a traditional welcome ceremony held at the East-End Sports Centre, King George VI School.

The highlight of the ceremony was the impressive showcasing of Guadalcanal Traditional Towering Chupu, emphasizing the province’s role as the host island for the Pacific Games.

Guadalcanal Premier Francis Sade spoke eloquently about the significance of the Chupu presentation of shell money, emphasizing its profound meaning of unity not only for the Solomon Islands but also for our esteemed Pacific neighbors participating in the event.

“The shell money and the Chupu hold immense value in Guadalcanal culture, symbolizing peace and unity for the Pacific Games,” Sade told regional reps and athletes who were present.

“We warmly welcome our Pacific Islands neighbors to be an integral part of this significant event in the coming weeks,” he added.

In an earnest call to the local community, he urged Solomon Islanders to extend respect to the visiting athletes and offer a heartfelt welcome to all the participating teams.

The ceremony received distinguished guests, including the Chair of the National Hosting Authority, Head of the Pacific Games Council, the Attorney General, and representatives from participating countries.

Their presence added to the auspiciousness of the occasion.

As the excitement builds, all eyes are now set on Sunday’s official opening ceremony, where the true spirit of unity and sportsmanship will be displayed on a grand scale.

Meanwhile, competitions in basketball, volleyball and table tennis will start tomorrow.
