The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has provided SBD 200,000 in support of the 9th Pacific Water and Wastewater Ministers (PWWM) Forum and the 16th Pacific Water and Wastewater Association (PWWA) Conference and Expo (PWWC25).

The event will be hosted by the Solomon Islands from 25–29 August 2025 at the National Aquatic Centre in Honiara.

A statement from the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrication stated the funding was received by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification (MMERE), Dr. Chris Vehe, who expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its ongoing support.

“This contribution will greatly assist in hosting a successful forum, enabling us to strengthen water and wastewater services across the Pacific and share knowledge, experiences, and solutions for a sustainable future,” Dr. Vehe said.

Since its establishment in 2015, the PWWM Forum has served as a key platform for regional policy dialogue on water security, a cornerstone of public health, economic growth, and climate resilience.

China’s financial contribution helps Ministers, utility professionals, policymakers, researchers, young water professionals, and development partners from around the region come together to collaborate and innovate.

This year’s theme, “Water and Wastewater Service for All: Connecting People, Policies and Communities for a Shared Sustainable Future,” emphasizes the urgency of regional cooperation to strengthen water and wastewater services. Ministers responsible for water and wastewater will convene for one and a half days to discuss pressing water security challenges.

The objectives of the 9th PWWM Forum are to:

  1. Elevate the Pacific voice on water security as a central pillar of sustainable development, resilience, and regional security.
  2. Advance sustainable financing and capacity-building opportunities to accelerate action on water security.

The Solomon Islands Government, in partnership with the Solomon Islands Water Authority, the PWWA Secretariat, and the Pacific Community (SPC), is working closely to ensure the success of this landmark event.

Last year, the Cook Islands hosted the forum in Rarotonga. This year, the Solomon Islands will host in Honiara, welcoming delegates, partners, and stakeholders to what is expected to be a milestone gathering in advancing water security for the Blue Pacific Continent.
