The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) has produced its first PhD graduate in environmental science.

Speaking at today’s 2024 graduation ceremony, SINU Vice Chancellor Dr Transform Aqorau said it is a historic moment for the institution.

“Today is also historic as we proudly confer our very first PhD degree,” Aqorau stated.

He said this milestone is a personal triumph for the graduate and a landmark in the university’s evolution.

“It is a powerful reminder that with determination and hard work, we can reach new heights.

“To our PhD graduate, your achievement is a shining example of what can be accomplished with dedication and a thirst for knowledge.”

Speaking as the first PhD graduate from SINU, Mary Tahu Paia said it’s not easy to achieve her goals, stating each one has faced their own challenges.

“As the first female PhD graduate from this esteemed institution, this is a milestone and I hope it will inspire others to pursue their academic and professional aspirations.” Mrs Paia said.

She said her journey in pursuing a PhD is not just an academic endeavor; it is a test of perseverance and resilience but, most importantly, her passion.

The institution also witnessed and celebrated the graduation of a batch of students from Vanuatu who graduated in the Bachelor of Nursing Acute Care.

Aqorau described the achievement as a testament to not only their dedication and hard work but also a reflection of the spirit of unity and collaboration that transcends borders.

“You have shown incredible perseverance and commitment to your studies, and your success will undoubtedly make a profound impact on the healthcare landscape of both your home country and the wider Pacific region.

“We are proud to have been a part of your academic journey, and we look forward to seeing the remarkable contributions you will make in the field of nursing.”

Meanwhile, the SINU Vice Chancellor said the institution’s commitment to excellence is steadfast.

“We will continue to nurture innovation, expand the horizons of knowledge, and ensure that SINU remains a pillar of education for generations to come.

“Together, we are building a legacy that will shape the future of our nation.”

Aqorau told the graduating students that their accomplishments are a testament to their character, grit, and will to succeed.

“Today, we celebrate not just the academic knowledge you have gained, but the spirit that refused to give up, the spirit that saw opportunity in adversity, and the spirit that has carried you to this day.

‘Your achievements are a beacon of hope, lighting the way for others in our nation.”
