The Coalition for Accountability, Reform and Empowerment (CARE) says it’s committed to pursuing a foreign policy that emphasizes balanced international engagement, placing Solomon Islands’ national interest at the forefront.

Matthew Wale, leader of the CARE Coalition, told In-depth Solomons in an exclusive interview during the launch of the coalition’s manifesto today.

“Our objective is to achieve a balanced engagement in the international arena, one that prioritizes the national interest of the Solomon Islands. It’s crucial to consider all development partners without focusing solely on one area,” he emphasized.

Wale said the CARE Coalition’s foreign policy is one that involves respectful engagement in the national interest and aims to secure maximum leverage for the Solomon Islands.

He stressed the importance of national consultation and consensus before making any decisions related to foreign policy.

Wale emphasized that while equal respect should be given to all international partners, including the US and China, the primary consideration must be the national interest when making decisions.

The flagship policies of the CARE Coalition include initiatives such as Free Education, Improved Medical Services nationwide, the creation of 25,000 jobs within four years, salary increases for public servants, teachers, nurses, and doctors, reduction of the cost of living, and increased investment in infrastructure.

Last week, OUR Party launched its manifesto, where the caretaker Prime Minister highlighted the decision to recognize China as a diplomatic partner in 2019 as a pivotal moment during their government’s tenure.

The caretaker Prime Minister expressed pride in the courage displayed, the challenges overcome, and the achievements made for the country under the OUR Party’s leadership.

CARE is a partnership between Solomon Islands Democratic Party (SIDP), led by Wale and Democratic Alliance Party (DAP), whose leader is Rick Hou.
