The second iteration of Exercise Coastwatchers for 2026 has concluded, with activities further strengthening the capability and resilience of Solomon Islands security agencies through Australia’s Defence Cooperation Program.

The second of three iterations this year, the exercise included 22 courses across nine different training categories, with 173 RSIPF personnel successfully completing their training.

The achievement reflects the commitment, professionalism and strong partnership between the ADF and RSIPF.

A statement from the Australian High Commission says safety has been a defining theme of this year’s Exercise Coastwatchers.

“From strengthening maritime safety through the qualification of additional Small Boats Instructors, to enhancing emergency response capability through advanced medical training for Provincial Officers, the exercise has delivered practical outcomes that directly support the wellbeing of RSIPF personnel,” the statement said.

“The introduction of the Vehicle Maintainer Operator Course further reinforced this focus by promoting safe vehicle operation and preventative maintenance practices,” it added.

“Collectively, these initiatives reflect a shared commitment by Australia and Solomon Islands to ensuring personnel are equipped with the skills, knowledge and resources needed to operate safely and effectively in demanding environments.”

Australian Defence Advisor, Royal Australian Navy Captain (CAPT) Emma Griffiths said the Defence Cooperation Program reflects our shared commitment to developing capability, enhancing professionalism, and supporting the ongoing advancement of our respective security institutions.

“It is a partnership based on mutual respect, trust, and a common interest in contributing to the safety and security of our respective countries,” CAPT Griffiths said.

Exercise Coastwatchers also reached several important milestones through the delivery of courses for the first time.

The inaugural Administration Course provided participants with knowledge and practical skills to support effective organisational management and administration within the RSIPF.

Meanwhile, the first Fitness Leaders Course developed personnel who can champion physical fitness and wellbeing, helping to maintain physical standards and promote a culture of health across the RSIPF.

Certificates of achievement were presented to the highest performing RSIPF members in each course.

“The certificates being presented today are a recognition of the dedication, effort, and professionalism demonstrated by each participant throughout this exercise,” said CAPT Griffiths.

“They represent not only the successful completion of a series of courses and qualifications, but also an investment in the continued development of the RSIPF and its personnel.”

The success of Exercise Coastwatchers demonstrates a continued commitment to building self-sufficiency, strengthening operational capability and preparing personnel to meet future policing challenges.

RSIPF leadership acknowledged the dedication of all instructors, support staff and trainees whose hard work made the program a success, while also thanking the men and women of the Australian Defence Force for their ongoing friendship, commitment and professionalism in supporting the development of the RSIPF.

Exercise Coastwatchers will return for its third and final iteration of 2026 in October.
