48 years of independence – Australia celebrates with Solomon Islands

Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Francis Sade and High Commissioner Jeff Roach enjoy the Independence Day celebrations at the National Stadium

A very happy 48th Independence Day to all Solomon Islanders!

Prime Minister Albanese speaks at the 48th Independence Day celebrations at the National Stadium, Honiara, on 7 July 2026.

This year was my first independence celebration as High Commissioner – and what a celebration! It was a special honour to witness it alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong who joined in the celebrations with gusto.

Independence Day is a moment to reflect on the values that unite Solomon Islanders: strong community bonds, pride in culture, steadfast faith, and a determination to build a better future for generations to come.

I was delighted that Prime Minister Albanese and Foreign Minister Wong could see this first-hand during the Independence event at the National Stadium. What a colourful and joyous celebration filled with families and children.

Prime Minister Albanese’s visit underscored the enduring friendship between Solomon Islands and Australia. His address reaffirmed the importance of Solomon Islands’ national sovereignty and its regional leadership. My Prime Minister also reminded us that Australia was the first country to recognise Solomon Islands’ independence on 7 July 1978 – day one!

Our two leaders enjoyed the festivities, but they also got down to business. In recognition of the priority Prime Minister Wale and the GREAT Coalition place on education, Prime Minister Albanese announced a package of support valued at SBD56 million which includes support to deliver a roadmap for the implementation of the Government’s free education policy.

The package also includes 250,000 new learner books and teacher guides – enough for every primary school student in Solomon Islands, an uplift in curriculum standards for up to twelve Rural Training Centres (RTCs) and a SBD22 million fund to support RTC refurbishments and upgrades.

Our two Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers also discussed the momentous opportunity to establish an elevated relationship, enshrined through a comprehensive bilateral treaty. This treaty will transform our partnership and take it to new heights, founded on mutual trust, respect and open dialogue. It will reflect and amplify our shared interests, and our common determination to make the Blue Pacific secure and prosperous.

Like all of Australia’s treaties, once finalised it will become a public document that any Solomon Islander can read.
Another significant event during Prime Minister Albanese’s visit was the handover of the Naha Birthing and Urban Health Centre.

The Naha centre is one of the largest investments in Honiara’s health system since independence, at SBD250 million. It is a landmark achievement that demonstrates what can be accomplished through close collaboration between Solomon Islands and Australia.

The Naha Birthing and Urban Health Centre represents our shared commitment to delivering meaningful outcomes that improve people’s lives. It reflects years of planning, cooperation and hard work by healthcare professionals and community members. It will serve the people of Solomon Islands well into the future.

The community-driven and consultative development of the Naha centre is a fitting symbol of our Solomon Islands-Australia Partnership. Our relationship is strong because it is grounded in listening, respect and a shared vision for the future. With close people-to-people connections and deep links in culture, sport and faith, it’s a partnership that is both enduring and dynamic.

On behalf of all Australians, I extend my warmest congratulations to the Government and people of Solomon Islands on your 48th Independence Day.

Australia is lucky to be your neighbour, and proud to stand alongside you as your closest partner and friend. We look forward to continuing our journey together in the years ahead.

Happy Independence Day, Solomon Islands. Lukim yu neks taem!
