Ahanga Wharf Construction Moves Ahead

Construction of the new Ahanga Wharf in Rennell and Bellona Province is moving ahead, with piling operations, structural preparations, and quality assurance testing underway on-site.

Supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Ministry of Infrastructure Development’s (MID) Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), the initiative will deliver a reliable, modernized transport hub for local island communities.

Contractors have recently focused on continuous piling works, assembling and installing pile plug reinforcement, and constructing temporary working platforms to secure the wharf’s foundation.

“To ensure technical standards are met, rigorous compressive strength testing on concrete samples is ongoing,” a statement the project office issued, said.

In addition, solar panels and associated power supply systems have been installed on-site, alongside routine equipment maintenance to prevent operational disruptions.

MID Permanent Secretary Mike Qaqara emphasized that the project remains vital for regional economic activity and passenger travel.

“Reliable maritime infrastructure is essential for our island communities, where sea transport plays a critical role in connecting people, moving goods, and supporting economic activities,” Qaqara said.

“Through the LMCP, the Government is actively strengthening connectivity for communities across Rennell and Bellona Province,” he added.

Qaqara also noted the priority placed on maintaining construction quality, adhering to environmental and social safeguards, and engaging closely with local populations.

In preparation for a joint site visit scheduled for later this month, project leaders continue to coordinate with the local Community Advisory Committee (CAC).

The upcoming visit will involve representatives from the MID, project consultants, safeguards teams, and the primary contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

The visit will allow all parties to review physical progress, address environmental and social guidelines, and ensure community perspectives guide project execution.

Once complete, the Ahanga Wharf will significantly boost maritime safety and access, expanding commercial and economic opportunities across Rennell and Bellona Province.
