The Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) Scheme continues to provide Solomon Islanders with valuable opportunities to gain skills, earn income and contribute to the country’s development.

That’s according to Solomon Islands High Commissioner to New Zealand Ishmael Mali Avui following high-level talks with New Zealand officials in Wellington.

Avui said the Solomon Islands Government values New Zealand’s continued commitment to supporting Pacific workers and maintaining high standards of worker welfare.

“The RSE Scheme continues to be an important pathway for our people to gain valuable skills, earn income, and contribute to the development of Solomon Islands,” Avui said.

“We appreciate New Zealand’s continued commitment to supporting Pacific workers and maintaining high standards of worker welfare,” he added.

β€œWe look forward to further strengthening this important partnership.”

Avui met senior officials from New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and Immigration New Zealand (INZ) on 29 July to strengthen cooperation on labour mobility, consular support and immigration matters.

The meeting reaffirmed the strong partnership between the two countries, with discussions focusing on enhancing the RSE Scheme, improving support services for Solomon Islanders in New Zealand and strengthening cooperation on visa and immigration issues.

Officials also emphasised the importance of continued collaboration between the Solomon Islands High Commission, MBIE and INZ through worker engagement programmes and outreach roadshows, which encourage Solomon Islands workers to prioritise their health and safety, build positive workplace relationships and make the most of employment opportunities under the RSE Scheme.

Talks also explored ways to improve worker welfare and pastoral care, strengthen pre-departure training, expand participation in the scheme and provide better support throughout workers’ time in New Zealand.

The two sides discussed measures to improve consular and immigration services, including closer coordination on visa processing and passport matters, better information sharing for Solomon Islands citizens, and stronger collaboration on emerging immigration issues.

Support for returning RSE workers was another key focus, with officials considering initiatives to help workers maximise the benefits of the skills, experience and remittances gained in New Zealand to strengthen families, communities and national development.

MBIE and Immigration New Zealand officials reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with the Solomon Islands High Commission to address shared challenges and maximise opportunities under labour mobility arrangements.
