China Funds Boat for Remote Temotu Nende Communities

One of Solomon Islands’ most remote constituencies has received a SBD$100,000 donation from the Chinese Embassy in Honiara to improve access to isolated communities.

Temotu Nende Constituency in Temotu Province says the funding will be used to purchase a Ray Boat and a 40-horsepower outboard engine to help deliver essential services and support development activities across the constituency.

Member of Parliament Stephen Kumi said the new boat would address a long-standing logistical challenge faced by communities scattered across Nende.

“The boat and engine will be used to deliver essential services and development projects to isolated communities,” Kumi said.

“This is the kind of practical assistance that makes a real difference, and one that other partners should also take note of,” he added.

Kumi thanked the Chinese Government for the support, saying the assistance would improve the constituency’s ability to reach communities that are difficult to access by existing transport options.

Temotu Nende is located on Santa Cruz Island (Nendo) and is home to Lata, the provincial capital of Temotu Province.

It is the largest constituency in Temotu Province, the easternmost province of Solomon Islands, located near Vanuatu.

Most people in the constituency depend on subsistence farming, coconut and copra production, fishing, small-scale cocoa cultivation and local trade centred around Lata.

The constituency has long faced challenges associated with its remote location, including limited transport links, high costs of delivering services and difficulties connecting rural communities with government programmes.
