China, RSIPF Train Community Crime Fighters

Nearly 100 Crime Prevention Committee members have completed specialised police training aimed at strengthening community safety following a suspected arson attack at Bloody Ridge National Park, east of Honiara.

The training, jointly delivered by the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and the China Police Liaison Team (CPLT), equipped committee members with practical skills to respond to threats, prevent crime and better protect their communities.

Held at Bloody Ridge National Park in Central Guadalcanal, the programme was attended by almost 100 Crime Prevention Committee (CPC) members.

Participants were divided into male and female groups and received hands-on instruction in three-person restraint techniques for dealing with troublemakers, as well as self-defence and escape skills to respond to assaults and other threats.

The training came in the wake of a suspected arson attack that damaged trees and restoration work at the national park, highlighting the need for stronger community-based crime prevention.

China Police Liaison Team representative Wang Yang said the programme demonstrated a united response to criminal activity.

“Fire can burn down trees, but it can never destroy our resolve to rebuild,” Wang said in a statement issued by the police.

“Our joint training and donation today are the strongest response to those who seek to disrupt our peace,” he added.

“You, the members of the Crime Prevention Committees, are the strongest shields of Bloody Ridge and the vital bridge between the police and the community in the fight against crime.”

As part of the programme, the China Police Liaison Team donated 30 uniforms and 10 torches to support the work of the Crime Prevention Committees.

The RSIPF said it remains committed to working closely with local communities and international partners to strengthen community policing and improve public safety across Solomon Islands.

The Force also encouraged members of the public to continue supporting their local Crime Prevention Committees and to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the police emergency line.
