China’s Jiangsu Province Expands Partnership with Solomon Islands

PM WALE AND VICE GOVERNOR YAN

China is deepening its engagement with Solomon Islands, with Jiangsu Province announcing plans to expand cooperation into agriculture, education, technology and skills development as Beijing continues to strengthen its presence in the Pacific.

The commitment was reaffirmed during talks today between Prime Minister Matthew Wale and visiting Jiangsu Vice Governor Zhao Yan in Honiara.

Jiangsu is Malaita’s sister province.

Discussions today focused on broadening cooperation beyond the existing sister-province relationship between Jiangsu and Malaita, with both sides expressing a commitment to deliver practical development outcomes.

Zhao said Jiangsu intends to strengthen collaboration in agriculture, fisheries, education and professional training while expanding cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

“We aim to strengthen exchanges at all levels and deepen practical cooperation,” Zhao was quoted in a statement issued by Wale’s office.

He also unveiled a new Jiangsu-led initiative to support agricultural development through science, innovation and technology, aimed at improving productivity, strengthening food security and promoting sustainable rural development.

“This is a shared priority for our governments, particularly in strengthening rural development and resilience,” Zhao explained.

He also praised the Wale Government’s education reform programme and reaffirmed Jiangsu’s willingness to expand cooperation in vocational education, skills training and human resource development.

“Jiangsu stands ready to work closely with Solomon Islands to translate our leaders’ consensus into tangible outcomes and take our cooperation to a new level,” he said.

Prime Minister Wale welcomed the proposed expansion, describing Jiangsu as an important long-term development partner.

“Jiangsu Province represents enormous opportunities for Solomon Islands – not only for Malaita Province, but for our country as a whole,” Wale said.

He added education remains at the centre of his Government’s development agenda.

“Education is fundamental to our national transformation. It equips our people with the skills, knowledge and discipline needed to build a stronger and more resilient Solomon Islands.

“With the right partnerships, we can accelerate development by learning from successful international experience.”

The Prime Minister said stronger cooperation with Jiangsu has the potential to deliver lasting benefits through improved education, innovation, agricultural productivity and economic growth.

Growing strategic engagement
The meeting comes as competition for influence in the Pacific continues to intensify, with China increasing its economic and development engagement across the region through infrastructure investment, technical assistance, education and provincial partnerships.

Since Solomon Islands established diplomatic relations with Beijing in 2019, cooperation between the two countries has expanded significantly, covering infrastructure, policing, health, education, agriculture and trade.

Jiangsu – one of China’s wealthiest and most industrialised provinces – has emerged as an increasingly important partner through its sister-province relationship with Malaita, providing another channel for cooperation beyond national government-to-government engagement.

The latest commitments signal that China is seeking to deepen that relationship further by investing in sectors that align with Solomon Islands’ long-term development priorities, particularly food security, human capital development and economic diversification
