The loss of not one, but both parents, within the same month is unimaginable and an experience no child should have to endure.
For Deborah Honimae, this tragedy tested her strength to its absolute limit, yet ultimately revealed a profound resilience.
Originally from the southern part of Malaita province in Su’uri’i village on Solomon Islands, Honimae is the second youngest of four siblings.
She is a final-year Bachelor of Commerce student, majoring in Human Resource Management and Land Management at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP), Solomon Islands Campus.
After years of hard work, sacrifice, and late nights, she is finally nearing the finish line as she prepares to complete her final units this semester.
Honimae’s hopeful spirit was tragically shattered last September after what was supposed to be a month of planning final projects morphed into the darkest chapter of her story.
“I lost my dear mother on the 4th of September. Not long after, I lost my dear father on the 21st of September,” she shared. “These two individuals hold a special place in my heart as the cornerstone of my home and a constant source of love, encouragement, and strength. Losing them within a short time has shattered me completely.”
“The pain was unbearable. I remember trying to put my thoughts together, yet being unable to focus on a single word. The world that once felt full of promise suddenly felt empty.”
She said every new day became a struggle, yet she plans to persevere with her studies.
“My achievements will seem meaningless without them, but even in my deepest sorrow, I could hear my parents’ voices in my heart, reminding me how strong and capable I am,” she shared.
“I pick myself up each day, reminding myself that completing my studies would be the best way to honour my parents. They had invested in me financially, emotionally and spiritually. I know they would want me to finish strong and carry their love with me.”

As she prepares for this last chapter to end, Honimae also cherishes her time at USP, a place that shaped her spirit and supported her even in her darkest days.
“I had dreams of walking across the graduation stage, not only for myself but also for my beloved parents, the people who had stood by me through every challenge, reminding me that education was the key to a brighter future,” Honimae said.
“USP inspired me to grow academically and as a person. Studying here has also taught me resilience, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for life and the people around me.”
“The flexible learning systems, like Moodle and online tutorials, made it possible for me to stay engaged and motivated, even during difficult times.”
“The Bible text, Philippians 4:13 is a verse I draw my strength from and always reminds me to push forward. When I finally graduate, I know that moment will not only be mine but for my parents too.” – The University of South Pacific (USP)
