In a move that has significantly altered the political landscape of the Solomon Islands, David Gina, Member of Parliament for South New Georgia Rendova and Tetepari, has officially left the “Solid-28” opposition coalition to join the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT).
Mr Gina was officially sworn in as the Minister for Rural Development by the Governor General, Sir David Tiva Kapu at Government House Sunday afternoon. The transition is a minor strategic win for the embattled administration of Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele as it fights for its political survival.
The defection of Hon. Gina immediately shifts the balance of power within the 50-seat Parliament:
-
The Opposition Coalition: Now stands at 27 MPs.
-
GNUT (Government): Has increased its numbers to 23 MPs.
While the GNUT remains a minority government, the narrow gap is critical.
In a house of 50, a simple majority is 26.
By securing Mr Gina, the Prime Minister has thinned the opposition’s majority to just one seat above the threshold, making the government significantly more resilient against a potential floor vote.
This political realignment comes as the nation holds its breath for a landmark constitutional decision. The Court of Appeal is set to deliver a ruling on May 1, 2026, which will determine whether Prime Minister Manele can be legally compelled to convene Parliament.
The crisis began in March when 19 MPs defected from the government, stripping the GNUT of its majority.
Following the walk-out, the newly formed opposition coalition filed a Motion of No Confidence and sought legal action after the Prime Minister refused to summon a sitting.
| Date | Event | Details |
| April 14, 2026 | High Court Ruling | Chief Justice Sir Albert Palmer ruled that PM Manele acted unconstitutionally by delaying Parliament. He ordered the PM to convene the house within three days. |
| April 17, 2026 | Government Appeal | Attorney General John Muria Jnr filed an appeal, arguing that the judiciary cannot interfere with the Prime Minister’s discretion to schedule “government business” under the doctrine of separation of powers. |
| May 1, 2026 | Final Verdict | The Court of Appeal will decide if the High Court order stands. If the government loses, the PM must face the Motion of No Confidence immediately. |
In a statement on Sunday night, Prime Minister Manele welcomed Minister Gina’s arrival as a “vital step” in ensuring the Cabinet remains functional during this period of judicial review.
“This appointment is a vital step in ensuring we remain on track to complete the work of the 12th Parliament.
“I have every confidence in the Minister’s commitment to seeing through our remaining legislative priorities and delivering on the Government’s 2026 national goals for the people of Solomon Islands,” the Prime Minister said.
The appointment of the former Western Province premier now MP, to the Rural Development portfolio is seen as a tactical move.
The Ministry oversees the distribution of vital constituency funds—resources that are often central to maintaining MP loyalty in the lead-up to a confidence vote.

With the GNUT now at 23 seats and the opposition at 27, the political landscape remains on a knife-edge.
The May 1 ruling will either grant the Prime Minister more time to recruit additional defectors or force a showdown on the floor of Parliament that could see the government fall.
For now, the inclusion of David Gina into the Cabinet provides the Manele administration with a much-needed boost in legitimacy as it prepares for its most difficult day in court.
