Government To Declare HIV/AIDS Surge A National Concern

by Ednal Palmer

The Government is expected to make an official declaration on the recent surge in HIV/AIDS cases once a cabinet paper on the matter is approved, Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele confirmed this week.

Speaking at a press conference, Prime Minister Manele acknowledged the growing concern, describing it as a “serious matter.”

“This matter was raised with me by the Minister of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) last week,” Manele said. “The Minister will be bringing a paper to the cabinet to make a declaration on the matter. The paper will come to the cabinet to make that declaration that we have a serious problem with HIV/AIDS.”

Recent reports from the Ministry of Health reveal a worrying rise in new HIV infections, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). From September last year to now, seven new HIV cases have been identified—six of them young men aged between 19 and 25. The remaining case was a woman.

Health officials say the sharp increase in infections among MSM marks a concerning shift in the country’s HIV landscape and calls for urgent, targeted interventions.

Dr. Rakei, Director of the HIV Program at the Ministry of Health, highlighted the trend during the commemoration of World AIDS Day, warning that the pattern requires immediate attention.

“This is a new trend that needs immediate attention and more awareness within the MSM community.”

Public health experts are urging increased education, testing, and outreach efforts to address the issue, warning that without swift action, the country could face a wider public health challenge.
