Minister for Lands, Housing and Survey Oliver Salopuka says the Government is committed to ensuring every Solomon Islander has access to safe, secure and dignified housing.
The Lands Minister said efforts are being intensified to address growing urban pressures, particularly in Honiara and other urban centres.
Speaking in Parliament, Minister Salopuka said the proposed National Housing Bill recognises housing as fundamental to human wellbeing and a critical pillar of national development.
“Every Solomon Islander deserves the opportunity to live in a safe, secure and dignified home,” Salopuka said.
“Yet rapid urbanisation, particularly in Honiara and other urban centres, continues to place significant pressure on housing availability and essential services,” he added.
The minister acknowledged that many families are currently living in informal settlements without secure land tenure or reliable access to water, sanitation, roads and other basic infrastructure.
“This situation demands decisive and coordinated action.
“The proposed National Housing Bill will establish a comprehensive framework for housing development, strengthen national housing policy, improve coordination across Government, and encourage investment in affordable housing,” Minister Salopuka said.
The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Survey is working closely with Guadalcanal Province, Honiara City Council and development partners to advance reforms aimed at improving land administration and expanding essential services to underserved communities.
“These communities are not temporary challenges.
“They are home to thousands of Solomon Islanders whose dignity and wellbeing deserve equal protection,” he said.
Minister Salopuka reiterated that the Government’s approach is inclusive and people-centred, ensuring no community is overlooked in national development efforts.
“Our commitment is clear: no community should be left behind,” he said.
