Construction of the new Kirakira Wharf in Makira-Ulawa Province has reached 90 per cent completion, with the remaining works expected to be finished by the end of this month.
The outstanding works include construction of the approach road and protective infrastructure designed to withstand harsh weather and coastal conditions.
Work is also progressing on the onshore facilities, including the passenger terminal, which will provide shelter and essential amenities for arriving and departing passengers. A short access road linking the new wharf to the existing main road will also be built.
Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), Mike Qaqara, said completion of the project would mark a significant milestone for both the Government and the people of Makira-Ulawa Province.
“This province has been without a proper wharf for many years. This modern and climate-resilient facility will improve access, enhance the safety and efficiency of maritime services, and support economic growth across the province,” Qaqara said.
He said the Government remained committed to delivering quality infrastructure that would provide lasting benefits for communities.
MID National Safeguards Consultant George Maere said a joint project team visited the site last week and held the sixth Community Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting with stakeholders.
“The team was impressed with the progress made and is looking forward to the completion of the remaining works by the end of this month,” Maere said.
“We are grateful to all stakeholders for demonstrating unity and a shared commitment to advancing the province’s development aspirations.”
The Kirakira Wharf is one of three major projects under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), alongside the Honiara International Port Upgrade and the Ahanga Wharf on Bellona Island.
The LMCP is a flagship infrastructure programme led by the Solomon Islands Government, with financing from the Asian Development Bank and implementation by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.
The project aims to strengthen the country’s road and maritime transport network, improve connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and enhance access to essential services.
