In a rare diplomatic bridge between Central Asia and the South Pacific, Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele hosted a high-level special envoy from the Kyrgyz Republic this week to discuss a landmark bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council.
The bilateral meeting with His Excellency Anvar Anarbaev, Special Envoy of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, marks a strategic push by the landlocked Central Asian nation to garner support from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) ahead of the 2027–2028 UN Security Council elections.
A Strategic Push for the UN Security Council
The centerpiece of the discussions in Honiara was Kyrgyz Republic’s official candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. As part of a global outreach mission, Mr. Anarbaev briefed Prime Minister Manele on Kyrgyz Republic’s vision for the council, emphasizing the need for inclusive representation that reflects the voices of developing and smaller nations.
Prime Minister Manele reaffirmed the Solomon Islands’ long-standing position that the Security Council requires comprehensive reform to better reflect modern global realities, particularly the unique security and existential threats faced by Pacific island nations.
Common Ground: From Mountains to Islands
Despite the vast geographical distance between the mountainous, landlocked Kyrgyz Republic and the maritime archipelago of the Solomon Islands, the leaders found significant common ground in their shared challenges. Discussions focused heavily on:

Kyrgyz Republic, which joined the United Nations in 1992 following the collapse of the Soviet Union, has become an increasingly active player in regional and international cooperation. For the Solomon Islands, engaging with Central Asian partners is part of a broader strategy to diversify its diplomatic portfolio and strengthen its influence within the UN framework.
The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to continue dialogue on international security and sustainable development, signalling a new chapter in the “North-South” cooperation between the two nations.
