Late Daniel Suidani Laid to Rest in His Home Village in Malaita

The late Hon. Daniel Suidani, one of the Solomon Islands’ most prominent provincial leaders and a vocal advocate for political integrity and local autonomy, was laid to rest yesterday in his home village of Sisifiu, Malaita Province. 

Hundreds of mourners gathered at St. John Anglican Church to bid farewell to the former Malaita Premier, whose legacy continues to resonate across the nation and beyond.

Suidani, who first entered politics in 2019 as Member of the Malaita Provincial Assembly (MPA) for Ward 5 West Baegu/Fataleka, rose to national prominence after his principled stand against the Solomon Islands’ diplomatic switch from Taiwan to China. 

His tenure as Premier, from 2019 to 2023, was defined by his outspoken defense of democratic values, transparency, and Malaitan self-determination.

At the funeral service, youth advocate and close friend Maverick Peter Seda described the scene as both solemn and deeply emotional. 

“The people of Ward 5 and the family of the late Hon. Daniel Suidani gathered today to pay their final tribute to their beloved leader,” Seda said. 

“Everyone was emotional — you could see how much he meant to his people. From elders to young people, everyone came to say thank you and goodbye.”

Celsus Irokwato Talifilu, Suidani’s long-time advisor, reflected on their years of collaboration, praising the late leader’s vision for a more self-reliant and united Solomon Islands. 

“He had a deep care for the people and a strong vision for a self-reliant, united Malaita and Solomon Islands,” Talifilu said.

In one of the most touching moments of the ceremony, Suidani’s daughter described her father as “a man of love” who always put his family and community first. 

Representatives from local tribes and provincial leaders also spoke, paying tribute to a man who they said embodied courage, humility, and conviction.

Seda noted that the funeral felt like a state occasion for Malaita Province. 

Most of Suidani’s friends said his passing leaves a big gap in Malaita’s leadership, but his legacy — his strength, his courage, his love for his people — will live on.
