Former Infrastructure Minister Manasseh Maelanga has dismissed claims of political opportunism, saying his group’s exit from the GNUT government was driven by failed leadership and national interest.

“We are not grasshopping,” Maelanga declared during a press conference in Honiara today.

“We are senior leaders. If you look back at our records, our histories, we are not like that (grasshopping). We move because there is something that makes us move.

“As leaders, we are here to serve our people, with justice and integrity. That is why we’re here. Our people mandated us to come and serve,” the east Malaita MP, added.

The comments come amid growing political turbulence as Maelanga, along with former finance Minister, Manasseh Sogavare and other senior members of the GNUT coalition, formally announced their resignation, Monday.

The move has sparked both support and condemnation from within the political establishment and on social media.

Some critics, including government loyalists, have accused the group of political opportunism—a charge Maelanga dismissed as ‘childish.’

“There have been immature and even childish remarks made about our decision—some coming from individuals in government, who were once part of discussions to move but have now stayed silent,” he added.

He also revealed that nearly half of the government MPs—especially from the Solomon Islands People’s First Party (SIPFP)—signed a petition urging action, but nothing changed.

Maelanga criticized what he called the hypocrisy of certain members who initially pushed to leave but have since chosen to stay.

“Those who first wanted to leave are now staying behind. But we have remained consistent. We stayed quiet for some time, watching. But we could not stay silent any longer,” he added.

Maelanga then issued a direct message to other MPs who may still be weighing their options, ahead of the motion to oust PM Manele.

“To those who are still sitting in the government but share our concerns, I urge you to make up your mind.

“You know what’s right. It’s time to act.”
