MALD Unveils Two-Year Agriculture Roadmap

Franklyn Derek Wasi Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MALD) has adopted a new two-year strategic roadmap aimed at strengthening agricultural production, improving services for farmers and supporting economic growth across Solomon Islands.

The roadmap was endorsed at the conclusion of the Ministry’s week-long 2026 Strategic Workshop in Tulagi, Central Province, where senior management, provincial extension officers and development partners agreed on key priorities to guide the Ministry’s programmes and interventions through 2028.

Permanent Secretary Dr Samson Viulu said the outcomes of the workshop will shape the Ministry’s future direction and support the Government’s vision of building a more productive, resilient and sustainable agriculture sector.

“The strategies agreed during the workshop will guide our programmes over the next two years and help deliver practical benefits for farmers and rural communities throughout the country,” Viulu said.

He added the workshop provided an opportunity for participants to assess the Ministry’s performance, identify challenges and develop practical solutions to improve service delivery and agricultural productivity.

Closing the workshop, Agriculture and Livestock Minister Franklyn Derek Wasi said agriculture remains central to Solomon Islands’ economic growth, food security and rural livelihoods.

He said the discussions had produced a clearer strategic direction for the Ministry while strengthening coordination between headquarters and provincial offices.

“We have collectively developed strategic priorities that will improve coordination across the Ministry and ensure our resources are directed towards achieving measurable results,” Wasi said.

“However, the true success of this workshop will depend on our ability to turn these plans into action,” he added.

Wasi urged Ministry staff to take ownership of the decisions made during the workshop and to promote a culture of innovation, accountability, transparency and teamwork.

The Minister also stressed the importance of strong leadership, sound decision-making and adopting innovative approaches to improve agricultural productivity, livestock development and the resilience of rural communities.

Representing provincial extension officers, Malaita Chief Field Officer Frank Omelanga said the workshop helped identify priority programmes and targets for 2027 while ensuring provincial activities remain aligned with the Government’s agricultural agenda.

He also called for increased government investment in agriculture to enable the Ministry to effectively implement its planned programmes.

Meanwhile, Central Province Principal Field Officer Kelvin Lamusasa thanked MALD for selecting his province to host the workshop, saying it was an honour to support an event that would help shape the future of agriculture in Solomon Islands.

Held under the theme “Transforming Agriculture for Economic Growth,” the workshop brought together the Ministry’s senior leadership, provincial extension officers and development partners to review progress, address sector challenges and map out priorities for the years ahead.
