Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele MP has reaffirmed the Solomon Islands Government’s commitment to deeper provincial partnerships, inclusive development, and stronger economic reforms, as he paid tribute to Western Province during its 42nd Second Appointed Day celebrations in Seghe, Marovo.
Speaking before provincial leaders, traditional chiefs, and community representatives, Prime Minister Manele praised Western Province for its long-standing role as one of the “economic engines” of the nation—powered by its thriving forestry, fisheries, and tourism sectors.
“Western Province has long stood as a pillar of strength in our national economy,” he said.
“Your forests, your rich fisheries, your pristine tourism attractions—these are not just provincial assets; they are national treasures that support livelihoods across our islands,” he added.
A Province Driving National Prosperity
The Prime Minister noted that Western Province’s economic success has made it a magnet for people across the Solomon Islands, creating a dynamic population united by shared opportunity.
He also commended the province for its exceptional hosting of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Retreat this year.
“You showcased the very best of Solomon Islands hospitality, professionalism, and unity,” he said, praising the people and business communities of Munda and Noro.
Strong Performance in Development and Governance
PM Manele highlighted Western Province’s impressive progress under the Provincial Capacity Development Fund (PCDF). Since 2008, the province has successfully delivered 408 projects worth SBD70.6 million, benefiting more than 60% of its population.
It has again qualified for the 2025/26 PCDF allocation with 31 newly approved projects valued at SBD19 million, targeting economic infrastructure, youth development, education, and health.

Efforts to harmonise CDFs and PCDFs

Western Province’s work on the Perpetual Estate transfer

Completion of ward profiles for the province’s 2025–2035 Ten-Year Strategic Plan
“These reforms will strengthen our governance, improve service delivery, and ensure that development is felt equitably across our communities,” PM Manele said.
Major Infrastructure Investments Announced
The Prime Minister announced several major infrastructure projects earmarked for Western Province, including:

Gizo Wharf upgrade

Viru Wharf design works

Gizo road maintenance

Construction of Uzamba and Barakoma bridges (Vella Lavella)

Rehabilitation of the North New Georgia road

Ongoing CAUSE 2 and SIRAP 2 works

Gizo Level Two Medical Store and a planned provincial medical store in Noro
These projects, he said, will further unlock economic potential and improve access to services.
A Call for Unity, Partnership, and Shared Progress
PM Manele concluded by urging leaders, communities, and development partners to continue working together to advance the province and nation.
“Development cannot occur in isolation. It must be built through partnerships at community, provincial, national, and international levels,” he stressed.
The Prime Minister was joined by the Minister of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening, Hon. Wayne Ghemu, and the Member of Parliament for Marovo, Hon. Chachabule Amoi.
PM Manele also reminded Western Province that its resilience, unity, and leadership remain essential to the country’s long-term stability and prosperity.
