Rexon Ramofafia, Solomon Islands’ Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Fataleka Constituency, Malaita Province has handed over livelihood projects worth SBD$3.2 million (approximately USD$380,000) to rural communities in his constituency.
The handover ceremony took place on 14 February and marked a significant step in efforts to strengthen livelihoods and community development in one of the country’s rural constituencies.
The projects were funded through the Solomon Islands government’s Constituency Development Fund (CDF), a national program designed to support grassroots development initiatives in rural areas.
Funded Through National Constituency Development Program
The assistance was financed under the Fataleka Constituency Development Fund allocation for the 2025 financial year and delivered in accordance with the Constituency Development Funds Act 2023.
Project support was distributed across four key development categories:

Cross-Sectoral Development
Social and Cultural Programs
The initiative forms part of Fataleka’s long-term constituency development strategy, aimed at improving living standards and strengthening economic opportunities in rural communities.
Equipment and Materials Support Multiple Livelihood Sectors
A wide range of materials and equipment were distributed to support housing, infrastructure, and income-generating activities. These included:
Building materials and hardware supplies
Water storage tanks
Chainsaws and forestry equipment
Solar-powered deep freezers
Boats and outboard engines
Fibreglass paddle canoes
Agricultural tools and farming materials
Solar lighting and energy systems
The resources are intended to strengthen key rural sectors such as fisheries, agriculture, forestry, water access, and housing construction, as well as support community and church infrastructure.
Focus on Improving Livelihoods and Living Standards
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ramofafia said the projects represent a long-term commitment to improving the livelihoods of people in Fataleka.
“We are changing lives and livelihoods,” he said, emphasizing that the program will continue in alignment with Fataleka’s constituency development plan.
He stressed that the primary goal is to improve economic opportunities and ensure sustained improvements in living standards for rural families.
Despite administrative delays in organizing the handover, the constituency office ensured all procedures were completed and assistance was delivered as part of the government’s 2025 development allocation.
Development Targets Linked to Solomon Islands’ 50th Anniversary
Minister Ramofafia also outlined future development priorities, particularly as Solomon Islands prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary of independence in 2028.
Key targets include:
Construction of more than 500 houses under a constituency housing program
Improvements in health and education services
Upgrading road infrastructure
Expansion of agriculture, fisheries, and forestry sectors
Overall improvement in living standards
“We can achieve these targets together once we unite and work together,” he told community members.
He noted that while housing and infrastructure remain important, future investment will increasingly focus on productive sectors such as agriculture and fisheries to promote sustainable income generation.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Rural Communities
John Misite’e, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development, said the project demonstrates the government’s continued commitment to supporting rural communities through the CDF program.
“This project delivery is a demonstration of the government’s commitment to support and improve rural livelihoods, even in remote communities,” he said.
He acknowledged financial constraints but affirmed that the government remains committed to ensuring rural populations benefit from development programs.
Community Participation Key to Long-Term Success
Minister Ramofafia called on community members to use the equipment productively and work together to support development efforts.
He emphasized that development is a shared responsibility and encouraged communities to maximize the opportunities provided.
The handover ceremony was held at Subobono Village in East Fataleka and attended by hundreds of people, including community leaders, church representatives, and residents from across the constituency.
The event concluded with traditional feasting and entertainment, reflecting strong community participation and support.
