North Guadalcanal Constituency Injects $360,000 into Road Upgrades to Boost Livelihoods and Drive Economic Growth

The North Guadalcanal Constituency (NGC) has rolled out a major road rehabilitation program worth $360,000, targeting four key feeder roads long neglected and rendered impassable. The investment, made under the constituency’s 2025 Constituency Development Funds (CDF) allocation, marks a renewed push by the constituency office under the leadership of Dr. Paul Bosawai, Minister for Health and Member of Parliament for North Guadalcanal, to strengthen rural accessibility and stimulate economic activity.

The rehabilitation works cover Suagi Road, which links Bridge Barol to the Suagi community; Maluka; Gilutae; Ghaimali; and the Suagi Catholic Church access road. These roads, previously left to deteriorate, had posed major challenges for rural communities, especially smallholder farmers who rely on road transport to move agricultural produce to market.

Roads as Lifelines for Rural Livelihoods

Hon. Dr. Bosawai said the rehabilitation initiative is part of his broader effort to build an enabling environment where communities, farmers, and families can meaningfully participate in socio-economic activities.

“These roads were abandoned for years and became impassable. Restoring them is crucial because transport access is central to livelihoods,” he said. “Our focus is ensuring our people can reach markets, access services, and improve their lives.”

The Minister stressed that road infrastructure in North Guadalcanal is more than a convenience — it is the backbone of the constituency’s local economy, particularly with the presence of numerous oil palm out-growers who contribute to the production stream of Guadalcanal Plains Palm Oil Limited (GPPOL).

He emphasized that strengthening transportation networks directly supports national economic output and employment opportunities.

A Continuation of Major Infrastructure Investment

This year’s $360,000 road program builds on significant investments made in 2024, when the NGC office poured $1.5 million into road upgrades with support from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) under the Rural Sustainable Development Program (RSDP), the Solomon Islands Government through the Ministry of Rural Development (MRD), and the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) via the National Transport Fund.

Last year’s works covered feeder roads in Taloa, Vutu, Ngalimbera, Koli, Komuporo, Tumurora, Ghorabau, Suagi, Roroni, and Rughavolo, providing a crucial transport boost across the constituency.

Communities Welcome Life-Changing Improvements

Local communities have welcomed the latest round of upgrades, calling it life-changing for access to health services, education, markets, and daily transportation.

Gabriel Vaghi, Chairman of Taloa Community, said the improved roads have transformed emergency health response.

“In the past, when roads were impassable, reaching medical help was a long and risky journey.”

“Now when we call for an ambulance, it comes straight to our community. This saves precious time and lives,” he said.

Women and girls have also seen marked improvements in mobility and safety.

“Before, we had to walk long distances to reach transport,” said Joyce Vaghi of Taloa.

“Now vehicles come directly into our community. It has made our daily activities — especially taking market produce — much easier and safer.”

Other residents shared similar sentiments, noting that better roads have enhanced access to education, supported income-generating activities, and strengthened community resilience.

Contractor Acknowledged for Quality Work

Dr. Bosawai acknowledged the role of Sustainable Resource Management (SRM), the contractor undertaking the rehabilitation works.

“Our collaboration with SRM has been instrumental in restoring these roads to a condition that supports our community’s needs,” he said.

“Farmers will now find it easier to transport produce to Honiara, ensuring a more reliable supply of goods for consumers.”

Vision for 2026 and Beyond

The Minister reaffirmed his commitment to long-term infrastructure development, stating that more road maintenance is scheduled for 2026.

“The return on investment from these roads is greater than the cost we put in,” he said. “Improved access results in increased economic activity and better livelihoods for our people.”

He expressed gratitude to the national government and development partners for their support, adding that the constituency remains committed to using CDF resources to drive equitable and sustainable development.

Hon. Dr. Bosawai also thanked God for His guidance and acknowledged the resilience of the people of North Guadalcanal.

More Community Projects Set for Handover

The NGC office will soon hand over additional development projects, including:

  • 200 roofing iron recipients

  • The completed Suagi Clinic

  • Logistical support for 12 identified economic zones

  • Support for tertiary students in 2026

  • Various livelihood assistance programs

These initiatives underscore the constituency’s ongoing commitment to raising living standards and ensuring rural communities have the infrastructure and support they need to thrive.
