Despite the positive feedback of a peaceful and free elections, the g7+, an International Election Observer Group, says Solomon Islands’ “need for an enhanced Civic Education for voters” would be their primary recommendation.

g7+ has praised the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission for the successful conduct of the joint-election in 2024.

“The election was conducted peacefully and freely,” Simon Sinai, Chairman of the G7+ and Electoral Commissioner of Papua New Guinea, said.

Sinai emphasized the significance of the voter turnout statistics displayed outside polling stations, which allow the public to gauge participation levels accurately. 

He also highlighted the progress made by the country in comprehending electoral procedures.

Other recommendations put forward by the Observers include:

  • Capacity building for election officials to maintain consistency in managing elections.
  • Implementation of voter verification processes to provide clear directions to voters.
  • Ensuring consistency between voter checklists and verification lists to streamline the process.
  • Provision of separate, larger voting screens to uphold the secrecy of the vote.
  • Addressing instances where polling officials missed out on voting, ensuring they are assigned to their designated polling places.

Helder da Costa, the General Secretary of G7+, stated that their mission in the Solomon Islands aims to facilitate peer learning and exchange experiences in election management.

During their mission, the Observers visited and assessed polling stations in Honiara and various areas of Guadalcanal.
