The Parliamentary Opposition has announced a new Shadow Ministerial Team, giving its MPs clear jobs to keep a close watch over Government ministries, decisions and public spending.
Under the new setup, each Opposition MP will track the work of a government ministry examining laws and expenditure, listening to communities, and putting forward practical alternatives to Government policy.
A statement from the Office of the Opposition states the related ministries will be grouped so every portfolio is covered.
The Opposition says the move sends a clear message: decisions that touch the lives of Solomon Islanders must be open to real parliamentary scrutiny.
“The Government holds significant authority over public resources and national policy, and with that authority comes a responsibility to answer to Parliament and the people,” the Opposition said.
Opposition Leader Manasseh Sogavare said the new structure would make the Opposition sharper and more accessible to the public.
“A strong Opposition is an essential part of a strong democracy,” he said. “Our purpose is not opposition for its own sake. Our purpose is responsible scrutiny, better policy, and a credible alternative vision for the future of Solomon Islands.”
The Opposition has 16 MPs shadowing a Government with 24 ministerial portfolios, meaning some members will carry multiple responsibilities. But Sogavare insisted fewer numbers would not weaken its duty.
Through the new structure, the Opposition said, individual ministries and their performance can be challenged wherever legitimate questions arise.
“What parliamentary democracy requires is more than a Government exercising executive authority,” the Opposition said. “It also requires a strong, organised Opposition prepared to question decisions, scrutinise the use of taxpayers’ money, and ensure those entrusted with public office remain accountable.”
The individual Shadow Minister appointments and their portfolios will be announced separately.
