Pirione Sworn in as New Ombudsman

Dick Stanley Pirione was sworn in as Solomon Islands’ new Ombudsman at Government House this morning, filling the vacancy left by the death of former Ombudsman Fred Fakarii earlier this year.

Pirione took his Oaths of Office and Allegiance before Governor-General Sir David Tiva Kapu during a ceremony at Government House.

A seasoned public servant and former permanent secretary, Pirione brings 25 years of experience in the Solomon Islands Government public service, including 17 years at the executive level.

“His appointment places him at the helm of an independent constitutional office responsible for investigating complaints of maladministration, injustice, abuse of power and unfair treatment involving public officials and government agencies,” a statement from the Government says.

Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony, Sir David congratulated Pirione on his appointment and urged him to perform his duties with impartiality, integrity and independence, as required by the Constitution.

Pirione’s extensive public service experience is expected to bring institutional knowledge and an understanding of government operations and governance systems to the office.

Established under Chapter IX of the Constitution, the Office of the Ombudsman plays a key role in promoting good governance, transparency and accountability in public administration.

Its responsibilities include investigating complaints against public officials and government agencies, examining allegations of improper conduct and discriminatory practices, and ensuring that public officials act in accordance with the law and principles of natural justice.

The Ombudsman can also report findings and make recommendations to Parliament, the Prime Minister and relevant authorities to address identified problems.

The office provides members of the public with an avenue to seek redress when they believe they have been treated unfairly by government agencies or officials.

It also helps improve public service systems and uphold ethical standards.

The Government congratulated Pirione on his appointment and wished him well in his new role.
