Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has downplayed reports of a renewed plot to bring down the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT), following media claims of a “Third Wave” motion of no confidence.
According to the Solomon Star, the Solomon Islands People First Party (SIPFP) has been actively working on a strategy to move forward with a third attempt to topple the GNUT coalition.
The paper reported that the party had held several meetings in recent weeks, during which the idea of fielding Fataleka MP, Rexon Ramofafia, as a candidate for Prime Minister was allegedly discussed.
The article further claimed that MPs Harry Kuma and Jamie Lency Vokia were also poised to defect and join the Third Wave movement.
However, it was noted that all three MPs have denied any involvement in the plot.
The report also alleged that those who attended the series of Third Wave meetings were allegedly told PM Manele was warned “not to touch” the SIPFP.
In terms of the numerical standing, the SIPFP is said to have 14 MPs and are working to get two more MPs to join the Party. The Opposition grouping, on the other hand, is said to have 13.
However, speaking to Journalists in a press conference last Friday, Prime Minister Manele said rumours about politicians are common, especially in an open and democratic society.
“Rumours will always be there. That’s politics.
“But the important thing is for stability to be maintained so the government can continue to function and deliver for our people,” Manele explains.
The Prime Minister emphasised that political stability is essential for national progress and for the successful implementation of government policies.
“Stability within the government is crucial.
“It allows us to deliver on our policies and focus on our development priorities,” Manele stated.
He also reaffirmed GNUT’s commitment to fulfilling its policy agenda for the benefit of all Solomon Islanders.
