Police have taken delivery of four new thermal imaging drones to help locate missing people, support search and rescue operations, and assist during natural disasters and other emergencies across Solomon Islands.
The drones were received through the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and Australian Federal Police (AFP) Policing Partnership Program (RAPPP).
RSIPF’s Drone Support Unit (DSU) will handle these new drones.
A police statement said the new drones were DJI Matrice 4 Thermal Unmanned Aircraft Systems equipped with advanced cameras and thermal imaging technology.
“The thermal imaging technology detects heat signatures that may not be visible through standard cameras, making the drones particularly useful when searching for missing people in low-light conditions or areas with limited visibility,” a statement said.
“Their compact design also allows officers to transport and deploy the aircraft more quickly, providing greater flexibility to support police operations in different locations,” it added.
“The four new drones complement the DSU’s existing equipment, training and operational experience, strengthening its ability to provide aerial support and help police make informed decisions during emergencies.
“The additional aircraft will enhance the RSIPF’s capacity to respond to emergencies, support frontline officers and improve public safety across Solomon Islands.”
