SIG Commits to Strengthening Agricultural Science and Extension Services

The Solomon Islands government has announced a comprehensive agricultural development strategy anchored in scientific research and strategic partnerships, positioning agricultural innovation as central to Solomon Islands’ economic transformation.

The Government will significantly strengthen agricultural research as the foundation for moving farmers from subsistence to commercial production.

Prime Minister Mathew Wale during the launch of the GREAT Coalition policy said, “We will strengthen agricultural research, improve extension services, expand access to markets and finance, encourage downstream processing of cocoa, coconut, kava and other high-value crops, and support greater participation by women and young people in commercial agriculture,” PM Wale stated.

This research commitment will inform best practices for Solomon Islands’ climate, soil, and crops, ensuring farming advice is scientifically sound and locally relevant.

Improved extension services will bring expert agricultural knowledge directly to farming communities. Extension officers will work alongside farmers, translating research into practical improvements that increase yields, reduce losses, and strengthen sustainability.

“The GREAT Coalition is committed to moving agriculture beyond subsistence towards greater commercial participation while preserving the customary values and community resilience that have always characterise rural Solomon Islands,” the Prime Minister said.

The Government will pursue partnerships with development partners, regional agricultural organizations, and research institutions to support Solomon Islands’ agricultural transformation.

These partnerships will facilitate:

  • Access to cutting-edge agricultural technology
  • Training for extension officers and farmers
  • Research capacity building
  • Market linkage development
  • Finance and credit mechanisms

Research will also drive downstream processing capabilities. Understanding optimal harvesting times, processing techniques, and quality standards will enable Solomon Islanders to process and market their own products rather than exporting raw materials.

At the policy launch, PM Wale extended gratitude to development partners already supporting agricultural initiatives.

“To our development partners who have already embraced this vision and are working alongside the Government in support of our flagship policies,” he said, “allow me to express the sincere gratitude of the Government and people of Solomon Islands.”

This partnership approach recognizes that agricultural transformation requires technical expertise, financing, and international best practices, resources that development partners can provide.

In a recent visit to China led by Deputy Special Secretary to the Prime Minister, Barnabas Henson, the team visited Guizhou Agricultural Sciences Academy which has conveyed interest for partnership in agriculture development with the Solomon Islands.

Mr. Henson told the Academy that his office is liaising with the responsible Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to work on that commitment.
