Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has reaffirmed the country’s expanding relationship with the People’s Republic of China (PRC), highlighting cooperation in trade, healthcare, infrastructure, and regional diplomacy during remarks at a Chinese New Year reception on Thursday evening.
Addressing guests at the event hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Honiara, Manele extended Lunar New Year greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government, and its people, expressing hopes for prosperity in the Year of the Horse.
“Let the Year of the Horse bring new beginnings to all of us. And may it inspire all people to embrace strength, nurture connections and persevere in the New Year,” Manele said.

He described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on progress since Solomon Islands established diplomatic relations with Beijing six years ago. Reflecting on six years of diplomatic relations, the Prime Minister said despite global challenges, 2025 marked a year of strengthened friendship and deeper trust.
Diplomatic and economic ties
Solomon Islands switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 2019, and Manele reiterated that adherence to the “One China” policy remains central to the partnership.
“Please allow me to reiterate again that the country’s recognition of the “One China Principle” in our six-year relationship is a step towards realizing the goal of advanced infrastructural development and rural, social and economic advancement.”
He said the policy underpins cooperation aimed at improving infrastructure, rural development, and broader socio-economic conditions in the Pacific island nation.

The Prime Minister pointed to China’s role as one of Solomon Islands’ largest trading partners, noting that Beijing’s decision to remove tariffs on Solomon Islands exports has increased trade flows.
With the country expected to graduate from United Nations Least Developed Country (LDC) status next year, he said discussions are underway on a potential free trade agreement to expand economic opportunities.
He also acknowledged China’s logistical support for hosting the 2025 Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, including the provision of vehicles for the event.
Development and health cooperation
Manele cited several development initiatives supported by China, including the handover and full operation of the China-funded Comprehensive Medical Centre in Honiara. The facility, equipped with advanced diagnostic technology — has expanded treatment capacity and enhanced training opportunities for local health professionals, he said.
In telecommunications, the Prime Minister reported that 141 towers have been built nationwide, with more than 70 integrated into the national network, improving connectivity across the geographically dispersed archipelago.
Beyond infrastructure projects, cooperation has broadened to include education, rural development, and people-to-people exchanges, he added.

Symbolism and outlook
Drawing a symbolic link, Manele noted that the Year of the Horse also marked Solomon Islands’ independence year in 1978, framing the moment as a reminder of renewal and progress. He expressed optimism about continued engagement with China based on “equality, mutual respect, and shared benefit.”
The reception concluded with the Prime Minister wishing a prosperous Lunar New Year to those celebrating, while reiterating his government’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties.
