Solomon Islands Expands Indo-Pacific Partnerships as Foreign Minister Concludes High-Level Visit to Vietnam

The Solomon Islands has signalled its intention to deepen engagement in the Indo-Pacific region following a successful three-day diplomatic mission to Hanoi by Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka, from 11–13 November.

During the visit, Minister Agovaka held high-level discussions with senior Vietnamese leaders, including Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, reinforcing Honiara’s commitment to diversify its diplomatic and economic partnerships.

The two governments formalised this intent through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on a Framework for Cooperation, paving the way for expanded collaboration in trade, investment, development, and technical cooperation.

Talks also focused on sector-specific cooperation, with meetings held at Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction and Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

Agovaka visited Viglacera, one of Vietnam’s leading construction-material manufacturers, to explore opportunities for product imports and potential Vietnamese investment in Solomon Islands infrastructure development.

Minister Agovaka described the mission as “successful and mutually beneficial,” noting that the strengthened relationship supports Solomon Islands’ broader goals of economic diversification, infrastructure growth, and regional engagement.

The visit marks a strategic step for the Solomon Islands as it seeks to expand partnerships across Asia and strengthen its role within the Indo-Pacific diplomatic landscape. Both countries have expressed readiness to advance the new cooperation framework in the months ahead.
