Solomon Islands Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Peter Shanel Agovaka, has reaffirmed the central role of trade in driving the nation’s economic growth, job creation, and resilience against global challenges.
Speaking at the opening of the 18th National Trade Development Council (NTDC) Meeting on 29 October 2025 in Honiara, Minister Agovaka highlighted the importance of integrating the Solomon Islands more deeply into regional and international trade frameworks to unlock new economic opportunities.
As Chairman of the NTDC, he praised the Council’s continued role in shaping national trade policy and ensuring trade contributes meaningfully to sustainable development.
“This forum provides a vital platform for government, private sector, and civil society to collaborate, share insights, and set common priorities,” he said.
The meeting reviewed several major initiatives, including the final draft of the National Export Development Policy, which proposes sixteen targeted actions to diversify exports and strengthen economic resilience as the country prepares for graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.
Members also received updates on Phase 3 of the WTO Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF), aimed at mobilising development funding, and from the Tourism and Investment Task Force, which focuses on improving the enabling environment for business growth.
The Council reaffirmed a shared commitment to inclusive trade development that empowers local communities and strengthens the private sector’s role in sustainable economic transformation.
Minister Agovaka urged members to maintain open dialogue and close coordination, stressing that “the success of our trade initiatives depends on our collective effort to work together effectively.”
