The Leader of the Independent Group and MP for East Malaita, Deacon Manasseh Maelanga, has sought clarification in Parliament on the Government’s position regarding the possible establishment of a national defence force for Solomon Islands.
The intention to establish the Defence Force was recently announced by the responsible Minister in Parliament.
In response, the Minister for Police, National Security and Correctional Services, Jimson Tanangada, confirmed that the Government is exploring the long-term establishment of a national defence force as part of its broader National Security Strategy.
The initiative, he said, aims to strengthen national resilience, sovereignty, and self-reliance.
Minister Tanangada emphasized that this move is not intended to militarize the country, but rather to complement the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) in critical areas such as maritime security, disaster response, and national emergencies.
During the exchange, Independent MP Manasseh Sogavare voiced concerns that establishing a military structure could carry risks similar to experiences in Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
Sogavare proposed that the Government should consider the formation of a Melanesian defence force as an alternative.
Deacon Maelanga welcomed the clarification from the Minister, noting the importance of maintaining transparency, public consultation, and regional cooperation as the proposal develops.
“The Independent Group believes that any future security framework must safeguard peace, stability, and national unity,” Deacon Maelanga said.
“We will continue to engage constructively in ensuring that such initiatives align with our national interests and constitutional values.”
The proposed national defence force remains in its early policy stage, and the Independent Office will continue to monitor its development in Parliament and through public consultations.
