A key section of the Tandai Highway will experience temporary overnight closures this week as crews install new street lighting along the corridor, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) announced.
The landside carriageway between the Rifle Range Roundabout and Solomon Motors in White River will be closed to traffic from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM across three nights, as of yesterday September 21, through Wednesday, (tomorrow) September 23. The highway will remain fully open to normal traffic during daytime hours.
The installation is being executed by Guadalcanal Electrics Limited (GEL) within the road median under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP).
Ministry of Infrasture Development Permanent Secretary Mike Qaqara acknowledged that while the work may disrupt normal travel routines, the night schedule is necessary to maintain overall safety.
“We understand that temporary traffic changes may cause some inconvenience to motorists and the travelling public,” Qaqara said.
- Heading toward White River:Â Drivers will be diverted into the left lane of the seaside carriageway, rejoining the landside road after Solomon Motors.
- Heading toward Point Cruz:Â Drivers will continue along the left lane of the seaside carriageway until reaching the Rifle Range Roundabout.
The construction site will be barricaded and marked with traffic signs, cones, and barriers. MID has advised motorists to follow the directions of on-site traffic controllers, reduce speed, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and budget extra travel time during the night.
The broader road upgrades along the highway are being constructed by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the LMCP—a joint infrastructure program funded by the Solomon Islands Government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
