Tropical Cyclone Maila Weakens To Category 1; Strong Wind Warnings Persist For Western Solomons

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service issued Strong Wind Warning Number Two at 4:00 PM today, Saturday, 11th April 2026, as Tropical Cyclone Maila continues to move through the region. While the system has weakened, authorities are urging residents and mariners in the Western, Choiseul, and Isabel provinces to remain on high alert.

As of 11:00 AM this morning, Tropical Cyclone Maila has been downgraded to a Category 1 system. The cyclone, which currently has a central pressure of 995 hectopascals, is situated in the Solomon Sea, southwest of Mono Island in the Western Province. A northwest to northeast wind flow is presently moving across the Solomon Islands.

Dangerous conditions are expected to persist throughout the weekend:

  • Western Province (Shortland and Mono Islands): Winds are expected to reach 25 to 33 knots (46–61 km/h). The area will likely experience very rough seas and moderate westerly swells of 2.5 to 3.0 meters, with a high potential for coastal flooding.

  • Isabel and Choiseul Provinces: North to northeast winds are forecast at 15 to 25 knots (28–46 km/h). Seas will be moderate to rough with westerly swells between 2.0 and 2.5 meters.

  • General Weather: Poor visibility is expected in areas experiencing heavy rain showers and thunderstorms.

The Meteorological Service warned that strong winds have the potential to impact lives and properties. Sea travelers are specifically urged to prioritize safety, as these conditions produce hazardous waves for small boats.

Authorities remind mariners that wave forecasts are based on averages; individual waves can reach heights two times greater than the forecast. The final decision regarding the degree of hazard remains with the boatman, based on their experience and vessel type.

The public is encouraged to share these warnings with people with disabilities to ensure community-wide safety.

The next Strong Wind Warning is scheduled to be issued at 7:00 AM tomorrow morning, Sunday, 12th April.
